26th Annual Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE) Global Fraud Conference, June 14-19, 2015 / Baltimore, MD
Onassis Vilaire shares her ACFE experience:
Every SOAEP student should take advantage of the complimentary ACFE student membership and should apply for the ACFE Global conference student scholarship.
Before I attended the conference, my entire fraud career outlook solely involved working for one of the federal fraud fighting agencies because that was the possibility most people in my classes were talking about. However, I learned that there are so many different kinds of fraud and forensic accounting professional opportunities available out there.
The ACFE Global Conference not only gave me the opportunity to learn about the diversity of fraud- related careers, it also gave me the chance to meet people currently working in those careers from around the world.
The ACFE offered over 70 educational sessions of fraud-focused topics included fraud investigation, prevention and deterrence, ethics and compliance, technology, legal elements, fraud auditing, risk management and more.
One of the sessions that I attended relating to Bank Secrecy Act (BSA) compliance was so inspiring that when I returned from the conference, I jumped at the opportunity to lead a consulting BSA engagement at my firm, McGladrey. I have also been given the opportunity to manage this three-year project in my new role as an RAS (Risk Advisory Services) Consulting Associate.
I encourage all SOAEP students to join the ACFE and apply for the Global Conference Scholarship. Even if you are not a scholarship recipient, I still highly recommend going. I’m confident your passion for a fraud-fighting career will be fueled as you enjoy this educational odyssey in a new city and network with fraud fighters from across the globe.
The 27th ACFE Conference will be June 12-17, 2016 in Las Vegas; I won’t miss it, and I hope to see you there!
